This piece originated from splitting a larger stone into two pieces. A fellow artist commented that we were the first people to ever see the texture inside this millions-of-years-old stone. His comment stuck with me and compelled me to accent the texture by placing this stone in a cantilevered position. The upside-down form also reminded me of all the peacefulness I have experienced hiking the mesas of Sedona, Arizona. I added the layered texture to mimic the mesa structure and a tree to share the sense of calm I get when wondering the top of a mesa. The concave texture on the top is untouched and appears exactly as we experienced it when the stone was split.
A special thanks to Steve for his inspiring comment that lead to this concept.
